Mamadou Diabate, Bobby Singh and Jeff Lang

Djan Djan is the freely available, expanded version of the wonderful CD by guitarist Jeff Lang, tabla maestro Bobby Singh and mind-boggling kora player Mamadou Diabate. Mamadou Diabate is a cousin of the world's most famous kora player, Toumani Diabate, and has been going from strength to creative strength since moving to the USA. Bobby Singh has lived in Australia for years but was born in England and spent much of his youth in Mumbai studying the tabla and is a disciple of the great Aneesh Pradhan. Jeff Lang is the Geelong-raised musician who, like Richard Thompson, combines incisive lyrics with virtuosic guitar flights of fantasy. They met when Mamadou toured Australia in early 2008. Djan Djan was spontaneously made one March day in Melbourne. With Jeff on acoustic lap slide, they make a new, inspiring sound. The original version of the album had only 5 tracks and was only available in one pressing. The new version has 10 tracks and is universally available, through ABC.

Perry Keyes

Perry Keyes' new album, Johnny Ray's Downtown, chronicles his youth and the colourful characters and locations of inner city Sydney. Everyone in this 16-song album is a real person who Perry grew up with, family and friends. And there are many references to heroin, used by most of the (fake) people in Perry's songs as a distraction from whatever reality they have to deal with.
